If your community has a newspaper with its own editorial cartoonist, have him come in to discuss his art and approach to commentary. If a visit won't work, perhaps you can conduct an electronic visit with the cartoonist. Here are some questions, you may ask.

• How does he choose his topic? Totally his to decide? Editor's suggestion?
• How much freedom does he have? Is this typical of smaller circulation newspapers?
• Does he try to tie his topic to a major issue or to a minor concern to draw attention to it? Any examples?
• Any suggestions he might offer a high school cartoonist?
• Did he draw for his high school or college newspaper?
